SAILING TO AABENRAA WITH A GREAT RECEPTION ON AUGUST 9TH

Speech by Signe Bekker Dhiman, Member of Aabenraa City Council for the Social Democrats, at the Arrival of Life-Boats in Aabenraa, August 9, 2017

"The arrival of Marit Benthe Norheim’s Life-Boats is an event in itself, and to have the opportunity to observe, experience, and listen to them is an experience that could undoubtedly stand on its own. But I am proud that in Aabenraa it has been possible to place them within a larger context."."Read the full speech

Speech by Kirsten Sønderby, Priest and Provost in Aabenraa, the Arrival of Life-Boats in Aabenraa, August 9, 2017

"We stood together and watched the Life-Boats, the lifeboats, sail into our deep fjord. Beautiful, gliding beings on the water, elegant and feminine, carrying stories and meaning for us as we see them. Because we can project our lives and our present, our longing and memories, into them." Read the full speech

LIFE-BOATS AT COPENHAGEN CONTEMPORARY

From July 4–10, the Life-Boats visited Copenhagen, where they were beautifully moored in front of Copenhagen Contemporary on Papirøen, admired by many.

A grand welcome was held in Copenhagen, featuring music by Lhuma, dance by Sigrid N. Ørntoft and Petra Skovholm, and powerful, personal speeches by Jens Erik Sørensen (Copenhagen Contemporary), Bent Sørensen (Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture), Else-Marie Bukdahl (Godmother), and Marit Benthe Norheim.

Excerpt from Else-Marie Bukdahl’s speech at the opening:

"Time and again, we experience that both poets and visual artists can change our perception of everyday life, give us new courage, and reveal parts of our world we may not have noticed. Such an experience is what we have when we encounter and sail with Marit Benthe Norheim’s Life-Boats. At the same time, they open doors to the world of imagination and challenge the veil of conventionality that often surrounds our daily lives.

And precisely because Marit Benthe Norheim has combined sculpture and music into a moving — sailing — artwork, they engage those who encounter them or come aboard in a particularly intense way. They appeal to all our senses, and many of us have already experienced how they almost take residence in our consciousness, continuing to influence our everyday lives." Read the full speech

Excerpt from Jens Erik Sørensen, Director of Copenhagen Contemporary, at the Opening:"When an artist has pushed themselves all the way to the limit to realize their idea, it gives all of us an unforgettable experience. That is what art can do, and it is precisely what Copenhagen Contemporary here on Papirøen aims to showcase."

UExcerpt from Bent Sørensen, Head of Communications at Aarhus 2017, at the Opening:
"A big thank you also to Marit Benthe for the fantastic project she has delivered for the European Capital of Culture. It is a visible example of the vision we have had for the European Capital of Culture regarding Co-Creation. The European Capital of Culture is created by the citizens, with the citizens, and for the citizens, in collaboration with professional artists, and this project has been in the making for almost 10 years."
